US teenager among three killed in Swiss Alps avalanche

An American teenager is among three people who have been killed in an avalanche near the Zermatt resort in the Swiss Alps, police have said.

The 15-year-old was killed alongside a man and woman whose identities have not yet been confirmed, police said.

A 20-year-old Swiss man was flown to hospital with serious injuries after the avalanche at 2pm local time on Monday.

It took place in an off-piste area of the Riffelberg slopes, which sit above the Zermatt resort and below the famed Matterhorn mountain.

Prosecutors have been investigating the incident.

Three people were also killed and three others injured after a helicopter taking a guide and visitors to a mountain drop-off point for skiers crashed in the Swiss Alps on Tuesday.

An investigation has been launched after the light utility helicopter skidded off its landing zone near Petit Combin peak in the southwest of the country, Valais police said.

Rescue helicopters were deployed to the area, and helped to extract two people onboard. A third was also rescued.

Last month, five members of a Swiss family were found dead after going missing while cross-country skiing near the Matterhorn in difficult weather conditions.

Authorities abandoned the search for a sixth missing person days later.
